Originally introduced as Starline at Google’s I/O developer conference two years ago, the project has now reached a stage ready for commercial unveiling. Unlike many of Google’s ambitious projects that never see the light of day, Beam has successfully transitioned from concept to a market-ready product. Google plans to showcase devices developed in collaboration with HP at the upcoming InfoComm trade show.

Beam utilizes a fusion of high-resolution cameras, artificial intelligence, and light field displays to create a volumetric 3D model of the conversation partner. Light field technology involves projecting multiple perspectives of a scene simultaneously using an array of microlenses or other optical elements. This allows viewers to see a represented person from various angles, enhancing the realism of the interaction.
Companies like MetaVista3D have already demonstrated the potential of such display technologies. At Display Week SID2025, they introduced a "pseudoholographic" monitor, hinting at the future possibilities of viewable 3D content without the need for special glasses.

Google describes the experience of using Beam as making eye contact and picking up on subtle cues as if the person were physically present. The depth and dimensionality offered by the combination of AI-driven video modeling and the light field display create a compelling and engaging interaction that builds understanding and trust more effectively than traditional video calls.
