Exploring Kubrick’s Cinematic Journey
The anthology kicks off with Kubrick’s early works, such as “Day of the Fight” (1951) and “Flying Padre” (1952), and moves through his illustrious career to his final film, “Eyes Wide Shut” (1999). Noteworthy is the inclusion of the international cut of “The Shining” from 1980, a version that has seldom been seen in North America and is approximately 20 minutes shorter than the theatrical release. This cut is said to intensify the already palpable tension, stripping down exposition to amplify the film’s haunting ambiguity.
What’s Inside ‘The Complete Kubrick’?
Criterion has spared no effort in restoring and remastering these classics, ensuring that they not only meet but surpass contemporary visual and auditory standards. The package is a treasure trove of cinematic history, including 30 discs that feature 4K UHD and Blu-ray formats. Each film is accompanied by its original soundtrack as well as remastered 5.1 audio mixes.
Beyond the films themselves, the box set is a deep dive into Kubrick’s creative process. It boasts approximately 25 hours of interviews, screen tests, and behind-the-scenes documentaries. Fans of “The Shining” will appreciate the 4K restoration of Vivian Kubrick’s documentary “Making ‘The Shining,'” along with commentary tracks from Kubrick experts Lee Unkrich and Michael Benson. Unseen screen tests for “Lolita” and other gems are sprinkled throughout the collection, offering new insights into Kubrick’s detailed directorial approach.
A Labor of Love
Producing “The Complete Kubrick” was no small feat, taking two years to bring to fruition. Michael Chaiken, Criterion’s producer for the set, expressed the immense responsibility felt by the team in curating this collection. Their meticulous effort involved consultations with Kubrick’s collaborators and archival experts to ensure authenticity and adherence to the director’s vision. The packaging itself draws inspiration from Kubrick’s methodical archives, featuring rare photographs, new illustrations, and annotations by Kubrick, making it not just a collection of films but a piece of art in itself.
As the Criterion Collection continues to honor legendary filmmakers by curating their works, “The Complete Kubrick” stands out as a particularly ambitious project. It not only preserves the legacy of one of cinema’s greatest visionaries but also offers his fans and new audiences alike an unparalleled viewing experience.
