In Darwin, Australia, the setting sun casts long shadows as fighter jets perform breathtaking maneuvers over the beach, much to the delight of thousands of spectators. This display serves as a token of gratitude to the locals who endure the roar of jets during the extensive “Pitch Black” exercise. The German Air Force is a significant participant, providing the second-largest contingent after the host nation.

Germany contributes six Eurofighters, two refueling aircraft, and around 200 personnel. In total, 21 nations are involved, including various NATO and Asian partner countries.

Refueling Operations: A Test of Skill and Patience

A German Air Force Airbus tanker is a daily spectacle in the skies, refueling various nations’ jets mid-air. Not every pilot nails the tricky maneuver of connecting to the tanker’s fuel line on their first try, which varies widely depending on the aircraft and the pilot’s experience.

“Every pilot is unique,” notes Kai, a refueling sergeant, highlighting the diverse training backgrounds of the participants. “For us, it’s an opportunity to interact with aircraft types we don’t see back home, which is a valuable experience.”

Intense Training Scenarios

German pilots are sharpening their skills in dogfights, defense against large-scale assaults, and night operations over the sparsely populated Australian Outback. The vast training area, half the size of Germany, allows for more realistic scenarios than the relatively confined spaces back in Germany.

“We can fully utilize this huge area and conduct operations with over 50 aircraft simultaneously with our partners,” explains Jürgen Schönhöfer, head of the German contingent.

Building International Relations Through Strategic Exercises

The “Pitch Black” exercise is more than a training ground for aerial tactics; it’s a venue for fostering international military cooperation and understanding across different defense cultures. This involves harmonizing procedures, communication, and mutual respect among the forces.

During his visit, Luftwaffe Inspector General Holger Neumann emphasized the exercise’s role in strengthening ties through shared values. “Though separated by geography, we are united through our commitment to a free and rule-based global order,” he remarked.

The Strategic Importance of the Indo-Pacific

For Germany, the Indo-Pacific is pivotal not just for security but also for economic reasons. Key global trade routes pass through this area, including the vital Strait of Malacca.

As China expands its military capabilities and adopts an increasingly assertive stance in the South China Sea and near Taiwan, tensions with neighboring countries and the U.S. are rising. This has led Western countries to worry about potential disruptions to critical trade routes that could affect global supply chains, increasing prices and delivery times worldwide.

“Exercises like ‘Pitch Black’ send a clear message about the interconnected nature of global security,” says Aylin Matlé from the German Council on Foreign Relations. “It highlights our shared security challenges and the collaborative efforts to address them.”

As the exercise wraps up in early August, the participating German forces will return home, but the strategic importance of the Indo-Pacific to Germany’s security and prosperity will continue to resonate far beyond the military operations in Australia.
