Dean Phillips Speaks Out: Political Violence Targets Minneapolis Friends!

Update on :

By : Byron Tiller

In the early hours of a seemingly ordinary Saturday, a chilling message was left by the police chief of a suburban Minneapolis town. At 3:17 a.m., the voicemail detailed a “critical situation” unfolding: a merciless killer was at large, having brutally murdered Melissa and Mark Hortman in their own home and critically injured John and Yvette Hoffman. By Sunday night, the suspect was apprehended, found with a list of intended victims—including my own name.

### Understanding the Tragedy

Melissa and Mark Hortman were more than just my friends; they were pillars in our community, known for their kindness and active support of various causes, including women’s reproductive rights. The idea that their advocacy could have made them targets is horrifying. The assailant, masquerading as a police officer, executed this heinous act under the cover of night, adding a layer of betrayal to the already incomprehensible violence.

John and Yvette Hoffman, also my friends, now fight for their lives, leaving our community in shock and mourning. The ripple effects of such violence are profound, touching all who knew them and many who did not.

### A Call to Rise Above Partisanship

In the wake of such a targeted attack, it’s crucial to remember that using this tragedy as a tool for partisan rhetoric is the last thing leaders like Melissa Hortman and John Hoffman would have wanted. Their lives were dedicated to bridging divides and fostering understanding across ideological lines. To honor their legacy, we must resist the urge to allow their deaths to become another point of polarization.

Instead, let us reflect on the values they championed and consider how we, as a community and nation, can move forward with empathy, resolve, and a renewed commitment to safeguarding the rights and dignity of all individuals.
