The Evolution from Animation to Live-Action
Traditionally celebrated for its visually stunning stop-motion films like "Coraline" and "Kubo and the Two Strings," Laika is branching out. The animation studio is setting its sights on the live-action arena, signaling a significant shift in its creative direction. This move includes several upcoming projects that promise to bring fresh narratives to the big screen.
Lulu Wang’s Cinematic Adaptation of "Audition"
One of the most anticipated projects is the adaptation of Katie Kitamura’s novel "Audition," which has garnered attention for being longlisted for the Booker Prize. The adaptation will be directed by Lulu Wang, known for her evocative storytelling in "The Farewell." With a script co-written by Pulitzer Prize-winner Martyna Majok, the film is set to explore themes of identity and deception through the life of a celebrated actress in Manhattan whose life takes a mysterious turn.
Star-Studded Collaboration
The project not only highlights Wang’s directorial prowess but also features a cast led by Lucy Liu and Charles Melton. The involvement of Barack Obama’s production company, Higher Ground, adds another layer of prestige, marking the project as one to watch. Obama himself has praised "Audition," including it in his 2025 summer reading list and highlighting its introspective examination of personal facades.
Beyond "Audition": Laika’s Expanding Portfolio
Laika’s venture into live-action doesn’t stop with "Audition." The studio has several other adaptations in the pipeline. This includes a film by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck based on Taylor Jenkins Reid’s novel "Atmosphere" and an original movie penned by "Dune" writer Jon Spaihts. Additionally, an adaptation of the action thriller "Seventeen" by John Brownlow and an original script titled "Crumble" by Brian Duffield are underway, with producers Phil Lord and Chris Miller attached.
Maintaining Animation Roots While Exploring New Genres
Despite its new focus, Laika continues to develop its core of animated features. The studio is working on "Wildwood," directed by Travis Knight, who is simultaneously handling the live-action "Masters of the Universe" film. This parallel development underscores Laika’s commitment to its roots in animation while ambitiously expanding into new cinematic territories.
Production Powerhouses Behind "Audition"
The production of "Audition" will see a collaboration between Higher Ground and Laika, along with Wang’s own production company, Local Time. The team is comprised of industry veterans including Vinnie Malhotra, Anikah McLaren, and Jeremy Kipp Walker, ensuring a blend of creative vision and executive prowess. Lucy Liu and Katie Kitamura will also serve as executive producers, bridging the gap between the narrative’s origin and its cinematic rendition.
Through these ventures, Laika is set to redefine its brand, moving beyond its animation legacy to possibly reshape how audiences perceive the studio’s creative capabilities. With a blend of seasoned and fresh talent, both behind and in front of the camera, Laika’s new direction in cinema is poised to captivate audiences with compelling, thoughtful storytelling.
