New Leaders at the Helm
With Kennedy’s departure, Dave Filoni, previously the Chief Creative Officer, steps up as the new President and Chief Creative Officer. Alongside him, Lynwen Brennan will serve as Co-President. Both Filoni and Brennan, veterans at Lucasfilm for over 15 years, will report directly to Disney Entertainment Co-Chairman Alan Bergman. Their extensive experience at Lucasfilm promises a seamless transition and an exciting future for the studio.
Kennedy’s Legacy and Future Endeavors
During her reign, Kennedy was instrumental in launching a new trilogy in the Skywalker Saga, which achieved massive box office success, and spearheaded popular Disney+ series such as “The Mandalorian” and “Andor.” However, her tenure also saw challenges, including the mixed receptions of “Solo” and a slowdown in the production of new “Star Wars” films post-“The Rise of Skywalker” in 2019.
Bob Iger, CEO of The Walt Disney Company, praised Kennedy’s leadership and vision, acknowledging her significant role in integrating Lucasfilm within Disney’s portfolio. Alan Bergman also commended her for revitalizing the “Star Wars” franchise and bringing it to new generations of fans. Kennedy herself expressed gratitude for her time at Lucasfilm and excitement about her ongoing involvement in upcoming film and TV projects.
The Path Forward with Filoni and Brennan
Dave Filoni, a key figure in the “Star Wars” universe since 2005, has been a driving force behind several successful series, including “Star Wars: The Clone Wars” and “The Mandalorian.” His deep connection with George Lucas and his vision for storytelling have positioned him as a fitting successor to lead Lucasfilm. Lynwen Brennan, with her robust background at Industrial Light & Magic and as General Manager of Lucasfilm, brings a strategic and innovative approach to her new role.
Brennan shared her enthusiasm for the future, emphasizing the unique community and creative spirit at Lucasfilm. Her leadership at Industrial Light & Magic and her recognition in the industry, including a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Visual Effects Society, highlight her profound impact on the studio.
Upcoming Projects and Expectations
Looking ahead, Lucasfilm is set to release “The Mandalorian and Grogu,” a cinematic continuation of the popular series. Additionally, the studio is working on “Starfighter,” starring Ryan Gosling, slated for a 2027 release. These projects, among others, signal a promising future for Lucasfilm under its new leadership, continuing its legacy of groundbreaking storytelling and innovation in filmmaking.
The transitions at Lucasfilm mark the end of an era and the beginning of a new chapter. With Filoni and Brennan at the helm, supported by their profound understanding of the studio’s heritage and their visionary outlook, Lucasfilm is poised to explore new horizons in the cinematic universe of “Star Wars” and beyond.
