A Fresh Start in the National League East Rivalry
As the New York Mets gear up to host the Atlanta Braves for a four-game series starting Monday night, both teams are set to showcase some changes since their last encounter just three days ago. This series marks yet another chapter in the storied rivalry between the two National League East teams.

Pitching Matchup and Recent Struggles
In the upcoming game, the Mets will send Paul Blackburn to the mound. Blackburn, who has struggled this season with an ERA of 6.92 and a record of 0-1, looks to improve against the Braves. Opposing him will be Spencer Schwellenbach, the Braves’ right-hander, who carries a more favorable season record of 5-4 and an ERA of 3.26.
Both teams are coming off a loss in their respective last games, with the Mets falling to the Philadelphia Phillies 7-1 and the Braves losing to the Miami Marlins 5-3. These losses further complicate their standings in the NL East, where competition remains tight.
The Mets’ Offensive Dilemma
The Mets have faced a significant slump, having lost eight of their last nine games which has seen them fall out of a tie for first place in the NL East. During this rough patch, they’ve been outscored 62-28, highlighting some serious offensive issues. The team has a batting average of just .218 over these games. Aside from the core performers Francisco Lindor, Juan Soto, Pete Alonso, and Brandon Nimmo, the rest of the lineup has struggled, batting a mere .186.
In an attempt to address these offensive woes, the Mets made a notable roster move by optioning catcher Francisco Alvarez to Triple-A Syracuse. Alvarez, despite showing potential with 37 homers in 228 big-league games, has hit only .236 with three homers in 35 games since returning from a broken left hamate bone.
Braves Facing Their Own Challenges
The Braves, on the other hand, have had their momentum disrupted by injuries, particularly to their ace Chris Sale. Sale, who has been a pivotal player for Atlanta this season, was placed on the injured list with broken ribs suffered while making a play in the field. His absence is a significant blow to the Braves’ pitching rotation, considering he had an outstanding 1.23 ERA over his last 10 starts. Didier Fuentes, a 20-year-old rookie, is expected to fill in for Sale. Fuentes became the youngest player in the major leagues when he debuted last Friday.
Recent Encounters and Historical Performances
The Braves recently swept the Mets in a three-game series in Georgia, which played a part in deepening the Mets’ recent struggles. Adding to the intrigue of the upcoming series, both Blackburn and Schwellenbach have had mixed results in their recent outings against each other’s teams. Blackburn had lost to the Braves, allowing four runs over 3 2/3 innings, while Schwellenbach managed a no-decision after giving up four runs over seven innings in a game that the Braves eventually won in extra innings.
With both teams looking to overcome recent adversities, the upcoming series could be pivotal in shaping their positions in the NL East standings as the season progresses.
