When October rolls around, Windows 10 users will face a significant change as Microsoft ends support for the operating system. This means no more security updates, feature upgrades, or technical assistance for PCs running on Windows 10. However, in a new twist, Microsoft is offering a lifeline to personal users—a chance to receive security updates for an additional year at no cost.

### A New Opportunity for Personal Users
For the first time, Microsoft is extending an offer previously only available to businesses, to individual users through the “Extended Security Updates (ESU)” program. This initiative allows users to continue receiving crucial security updates beyond the official end of support. Starting in July and expected to be fully rolled out by mid-August, a registration assistant will be updated onto PCs to facilitate this process. This assistant will appear in notifications and settings, according to Microsoft. Those who are part of the Windows-Insider-Program are already able to access this feature.
### How to Secure an Extra Year of Updates
Windows 10 users looking to extend their updates have three potential paths they can take:
1. Pay a fee of $30.
2. Redeem 1000 Microsoft-Rewards points, which can be accumulated through activities like using the Bing search engine.
3. Opt for a Windows cloud backup to trigger the registration automatically.
The third option, which involves synchronizing system settings, appears to be free of charge. This process requires minimal storage space—up to 5 GB in the OneDrive cloud, which is offered for free. However, if a full Windows backup is required, similar to preparations for transitioning to Windows 11 that includes personal data and files, the free storage might not suffice. In such cases, the smallest OneDrive subscription providing 100 GB costs 2 euros monthly or 20 euros annually.
Through these measures, Microsoft not only ensures continued protection for Windows 10 users but also provides various options to accommodate different user needs and preferences. The introduction of a registration assistant simplifies the process, making it accessible for all users to maintain their system’s security effectively.
