As the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences approaches its centennial in 2027, it’s launching an exciting initiative to celebrate the venues that bring movies to life: the Academy Marquee Theater List. This new annual award will spotlight the top 50 movie theaters globally, divided equally between the United States and international locations.

### Celebrating Cinematic Excellence
The Marquee Theater List isn’t just another award; it’s a nod to the places that make the magic of cinema accessible. Similar to the Michelin Guide in the culinary world, this list will honor theaters that meet high standards in several critical areas. These criteria include community involvement, the quality of visual and audio presentation, diverse and inclusive programming, and the overall design and atmosphere of the theater, including concessions and cleanliness (hopefully leaving sticky floors out of the equation).
### The Nomination Process
Theaters from all around the globe are invited to apply for consideration. Each application, however, comes with a fee, and there are specific requirements: the theaters must operate year-round and can showcase either first-run films or special repertory screenings. The selection process will be rigorous, ensuring that only the most commendable theaters make the list. Notably, any Academy member who has a direct business interest in a particular theater will be excluded from the voting process to maintain integrity and fairness.
Governor Jason Reitman, who proposed this initiative, emphasized its importance in celebrating the communal experience of moviegoing. The final selection will be made by a committee of Academy members from various branches, with the Academy’s Board of Governors giving final approval.
### What Makes a Theater Stand Out?
The Academy is looking for theaters that are not only great places to watch a film but also contribute significantly to their communities and the broader film industry. This includes considerations for historic significance, efforts in preservation, and how well each theater integrates cutting-edge technology with comfort and aesthetic appeal. Additionally, theaters that go the extra mile to ensure accessibility and inclusivity for all patrons will stand out in the application process.
### Key Dates and Future Prospects
The application process is currently open, with a deadline set for August 25, 2026. This initiative not only sets a new standard for recognizing excellence in movie theater experiences but also ties back to the Academy’s broader mission of supporting and promoting the film industry globally. Academy CEO Bill Kramer and president Lynette Howell Taylor expressed their enthusiasm for the project, noting that it celebrates the tradition of moviegoing and helps to unify the global film community.
This new tradition, starting with the Academy’s 100th anniversary, promises to elevate the standards of movie theaters worldwide, encouraging them to innovate and improve the cinematic experience for audiences everywhere.
