Ecoflow Wave 3: A Portable Air Conditioner with Dual Hose Power

Unique Features and Performance

The Ecoflow Wave 3 stands out in the portable air conditioner market due to its dual-hose system. Unlike typical single-hose models that struggle with efficiency by creating a vacuum and pulling in warm air from the outside, the Wave 3 uses its additional hose to draw in fresh air. This feature allows it to approach the cooling power of fixed installations under optimal conditions. Despite its compact size of 519 x 297 x 336 millimeters and weighing 15.6 kilograms, the Ecoflow Wave 3 leverages technology to enhance its cooling capacity effectively.

Upgraded Cooling Capabilities

The Wave 3 model has experienced an increase in power from 5100 BTU (1500 watts) to 6100 BTU (1800 watts), enabling it to cool larger areas up to 17 square meters, a significant improvement over its predecessor. Its performance was tested in a 13 square meter attic room with a volume of approximately 30 cubic meters. Under these ideal conditions, the Wave 3 demonstrated its enhanced capabilities.

Installation Necessities for Optimal Functionality

Out of the box, the Wave 3 is ready to use, but effective operation requires a bit of setup. To prevent the backflow of hot air into the room, Ecoflow includes a cardboard cutout for the hose diameters. However, for a more permanent solution, one might consider custom modifications such as a Plexiglass pane fitted to the window with holes for the hoses. This setup ensures that air flows exclusively through the hoses, maximizing cooling efficiency.

User-Friendly Interface and Additional Functions

Operating the Wave 3 is straightforward. The device comes with a simple guide, allowing users to adjust settings like temperature and fan speed directly on the unit. Besides cooling, the Wave 3 features a heating option and can also act as a dehumidifier. Settings are easily adjusted using arrow keys, and all values are displayed on an onboard screen. For convenience, these settings can also be controlled via the Ecoflow app, which provides access to a more detailed user manual and additional features.

Enhanced Battery for Greater Mobility

An optional battery pack makes the Wave 3 genuinely portable. While the unit can function while plugged into an outlet, the battery pack, priced at approximately 600 euros, offers mobility and an increased total weight of about 9.7 kilograms. The battery is built with lithium iron phosphate, known for its longevity and capable of retaining at least 80% capacity even after 4000 charge cycles. This translates to potentially over ten years of use, assuming daily charging.

Special Features for Pet Owners and Remote Notifications

A notable feature of the Wave 3 is its "Pet Care" option, designed for situations when pets are left in vehicles. This function activates when temperatures hit 40 degrees, turning on the air conditioner to cool down to 25 degrees swiftly. Furthermore, if the device is within Bluetooth range, it sends a notification to the owner’s smartphone, adding an extra layer of security for pet safety.

Performance and Energy Consumption

When connected to a power source, the Wave 3 is relatively economical, consuming about 650 watts at peak operation and approximately 5.5 kilowatt-hours over eight hours. This equates to a cost of around 2.40 euros, based on a 30 cent per kilowatt-hour rate. Battery operation offers an Eco mode, which is more energy efficient but cools the space more slowly.

Real-World Application Limits

The Ecoflow Wave 3 performs admirably in small spaces like RVs and garden sheds, especially when conditions are ideal. However, its effectiveness diminishes under less optimal conditions, such as direct sunlight exposure without any power source. Thus, while the Wave 3 is a robust tool for combating heat, it is crucial to manage expectations and ensure conditions are conducive for its optimal performance.
