The Chilling Arrival of ‘River’: A Horror Market Sensation
Mark your calendars! The much-anticipated horror flick ‘River’ is set to make its theatrical debut on January 15, 2027. Produced by Universal Pictures and Blumhouse Atomic Monster, this film is gearing up to compete against major titles like ‘The Beekeeper 2’ starring Jason Statham and the fantasy adaptation ‘Children of Blood and Bone’.

‘River’ plunges into the eerie tale of three siblings drawn back to their hometown for their father’s funeral. What was meant to be a somber gathering turns horrific as they find themselves in the crosshairs of a relentless killer. This storyline captured the audience’s attention at the Toronto International Film Festival, setting the stage for a heated bidding war over its distribution rights.
From Festival Fame to Big Screen
Originally produced by Independent Film Company and Shudder, ‘River’ was poised to be a pioneering original production for Shudder’s streaming platform. However, the film’s fate took a dramatic turn post-premiere when Universal and Blumhouse stepped in with an offer exceeding $10 million, securing the rights to the movie. This deal not only marked a significant shift from its initial release plans but also highlighted the film’s overwhelming acclaim and potential.

The partnership between Joshua Giuliano, the writer and director of ‘River’, and these major studios was already established through another project titled ‘Occupant’. Securing ‘River’ was a strategic move by Universal and Blumhouse, who had to outmaneuver other heavyweights like Sony Pictures and Netflix.
Star Power and Critical Acclaim
‘River’ boasts a robust cast including Jane Levy, Jessica Rothe, Max Mattern, and Dane DiLiegro, whose performances are set against a backdrop of suspense and terror. Critics have lauded the film, which currently holds a 94% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
Scott Shooman, head of IFC Entertainment Group, expressed pride in the film’s journey: “To see our first Shudder Original Production launch at Toronto with this kind of response—from audiences, critics, and the marketplace—is enormously gratifying. At Shudder and IFC, we focus on identifying innovative projects and collaborating with both renowned and emerging filmmakers. Josh is a prime example of the visionary talent we aim to support. ‘River’ underscores our commitment to elevating distinctive films that resonate with audiences and critics alike.”
Meanwhile, Blumhouse continues its impressive run, releasing other successful titles this year such as ‘Backrooms' and 'Obsession‘, directed by the promising young talents Kane Parsons and Curry Barker.
As ‘River’ prepares for its nationwide release, the horror landscape looks promising with this fresh and thrilling addition. The film not only showcases the collaborative prowess of seasoned and new filmmakers but also sets a new benchmark in the horror genre for its riveting narrative and strategic production dynamics.
