The Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) is set to unveil its Platform program for the 2025 edition, promising a cinematic feast with a lineup that spans diverse cultures and unique narratives. Since its inception, this segment of TIFF has become synonymous with discovering filmmaking talents who bring fresh perspectives and innovative storytelling to the silver screen. Names like Barry Jenkins and Darius Marder, among others, have graced this platform, showcasing their films before achieving global acclaim.

This year, TIFF’s Platform segment will feature an intriguing mix of 10 films from 19 different countries, ensuring a variety of cinematic experiences. The program will kick off with “Steve,” a film by Belgian director Tim Mielants, featuring Tracey Ullman and Academy Award-winner Cillian Murphy. This marks Mielants’ first TIFF appearance and his third collaboration with Murphy, setting high expectations for the festival’s opening.

The judging panel for the Platform competition includes a blend of seasoned and emerging talents in the film industry. The jury is chaired by Carlos Marqués-Marcet, a Spanish filmmaker and the previous year’s Platform Award winner. Joining him are Oscar nominee Marianne Jean-Baptiste and Canadian filmmaker Chloé Robichaud, each bringing their unique insights and experiences to the table.

Among the films in competition, viewers can look forward to a variety of narratives including “Between Dreams and Hope” by Iranian director Farnoosh Samadi, a poignant queer love story set against the backdrop of traditional societal values. Another highlight is “Bouchra,” an animated feature by partners Orian Barki and Meriem Bennani, which explores personal and cultural identity through the lens of a Moroccan filmmaker living in New York.

“Steve” offers a compelling narrative set in a reform school in the mid-90s, led by headteacher Steve, played by Cillian Murphy. The film delves into themes of integrity, mental health, and survival in a forgotten educational institution. Additionally, “Hen” by György Pálfi presents an unconventional story of a chicken’s fight for survival and motherhood in a quirky yet darkly comedic setting.

This year’s TIFF Platform also includes “The World of Love” by South Korean filmmaker Yoon Ga-eun, a film that explores the complexities of teenage love and identity through the eyes of 17-year-old Jooin. The narrative unfolds as Jooin navigates the tumultuous waters of high school relationships and societal expectations.

“Sk+te’kmujue’katik (At the Place of Ghosts)” by Bretten Hannam is another film to watch out for. This Canadian feature focuses on the journey of two siblings haunted by a malevolent spirit, which forces them to confront their past traumas and reconnect with their roots.

The TIFF Platform program, under the direction of Robyn Citizen, aims to spotlight early- to mid-career filmmakers who are poised to make significant impacts on the global stage. The winning film will receive a $20,000 CAD cash prize, a testament to TIFF’s commitment to supporting and nurturing filmmaking talent.

In addition to the Platform segment, TIFF 2025 will feature a plethora of films across various sections, promising a rich tapestry of stories that reflect the current global cinema landscape. As the festival approaches, anticipation builds for what is set to be a celebration of cinematic artistry and innovation.
