When it comes to shopping for jewelry, baby toys, and USB chargers at unbeatably low prices, many consumers turn to online marketplaces like Temu and Shein. However, recent findings from Stiftung Warentest, in collaboration with consumer organizations from Belgium and Denmark, have raised serious concerns about the safety and quality of these budget purchases.

Survey Reveals Popularity Among Young Shoppers
A study conducted by ibi Research at the University of Regensburg, which surveyed 2,000 individuals aged 16 and above, discovered that 36% of respondents have shopped on Temu, while 26% have used Shein. These platforms, popular especially among younger demographics, attract customers with their low prices and vast selection. However, shoppers may need to temper their expectations regarding the quality of products offered.
Widespread Non-compliance with EU Safety Standards
The investigation into 162 products purchased from these sites revealed a concerning trend: more than two-thirds did not meet EU safety requirements. The total cost of these items was around 690 euros—a small sum indicating the low investment in product quality. Among the tested items, some posed significant safety and health risks. For instance, two necklaces from Shein contained alarmingly high levels of cadmium, a carcinogenic substance harmful to bones and kidneys, exceeding the EU’s permissible limit by 8,500 times.
Dangerous Levels of Toxic Substances in Children’s Toys
The examination extended to baby toys, where various products failed safety checks. Colorful cloth toys were found to contain excessive levels of formaldehyde, which can cause contact allergies, and some squeaky balls were louder than EU regulations allow. Misleading or absent warning labels were additional issues plaguing many items, further emphasizing the safety risks involved.
Overheating USB Chargers Pose Fire Risks
Nearly all tested USB chargers from these marketplaces failed to comply with EU safety standards. Many of these chargers heated up to around 88 degrees Celsius during operation, well above the EU’s maximum allowed temperature of 77 degrees. This overheating can deform the charger’s plastic casing and damage internal insulation, potentially leading to fires.
Responses from Temu and Shein
Following the release of these worrying results, both Temu and Shein were quick to respond. A spokesperson from Shein assured that the company takes product safety seriously and collaborates with internationally recognized testing bodies such as Bureau Veritas and SGS. Shein reported that it had already removed two of the problematic products following its safety checks before the Stiftung Warentest report was published.
Temu also expressed a commitment to product safety and compliance with EU regulations. The company stated that it had removed all non-compliant products identified in the report and informed the sellers involved. Temu highlighted its multi-tier quality control system designed to detect non-conforming products and its proactive approach to ensuring compliance through independent testing organizations.
Consumer Advice from Experts
Florian Ostermann, an expert from Stiftung Warentest, advised consumers to dispose of the dangerous products and carefully consider the safety of items purchased from these platforms. He specifically mentioned that products containing cadmium should not be discarded in household trash but taken to a hazardous waste collection site.
