Zach Cregger: Juggling Multiple Projects Including a Possible ‘Weapons’ Prequel

Zach Cregger’s rise to prominence as a filmmaker was cemented by the success of his movie “Weapons,” which has not only performed well at the box office but also garnered critical acclaim. Given the film’s success, discussions about a prequel are already on the table with Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema showing keen interest. However, the actualization of this project hinges on Cregger’s availability, who is currently overwhelmed with numerous commitments.

The Enigma of Aunt Gladys

In the original script of “Weapons,” Cregger had included a detailed backstory of Aunt Gladys, the film’s enigmatic antagonist portrayed by Amy Madigan. Described by many as a quintessential fairy tale villain, Aunt Gladys’s mysterious past and motives added a layer of intrigue to the storyline. Although this backstory was eventually cut from the final script, it provided a blank slate for potentially deepening the character’s narrative in future projects. Warner Bros. has expressed interest in possibly transforming this omitted backstory into a standalone feature, yet no concrete plans or timelines have been established.

Zach Cregger’s Busy Slate

Cregger is not short on projects. He is currently prepping for his next big venture—a new adaptation of the “Resident Evil” video game series for Sony. This project, too, was the subject of a heated bidding war, similar to “Weapons,” but ultimately went to Sony. The film is scheduled for a theatrical release in September 2026.

Besides “Resident Evil,” Cregger has several other scripts in the pipeline. He has penned “Henchman,” a script set in the DC Universe that diverges from typical superhero tales. Additionally, he has completed a science fiction script titled “Flood” and is developing another original project akin to the style of the film “Nightcrawler.” These projects reflect Cregger’s diverse creative interests and his potential directions post-“Resident Evil.”

Box Office Success and Critical Acclaim

“Weapons” has not only been a commercial success, amassing $48.7 million domestically and $81.3 million globally on a budget of $38 million, but it has also been one of the year’s best-reviewed films. Its success at the box office and with critics highlights the effective storytelling and filmmaking techniques employed by Cregger, further solidifying his reputation in the industry.

As Cregger navigates his burgeoning career, the potential for a “Weapons” prequel remains intriguing yet uncertain. With his schedule packed with high-profile projects, only time will tell if and when he will return to expand the universe of “Weapons.”
