A New Record: T-Rex Skeleton Fetches Over $50 Million at Auction

In an extraordinary display of historical value and collector interest, the T-Rex skeleton known as “Gus” has shattered previous auction records by fetching more than $50 million. This sale not only underscores the rarity and importance of such finds but also marks a significant moment in the world of paleontological auctions.

The bidding war for Gus concluded with a phone bidder securing the skeleton for an initial bid of $43 million. After accounting for auction house fees, the total soared past the $50 million mark, setting a new benchmark for the sale of dinosaur fossils.

Gus is renowned for being one of the largest and most complete T-Rex skeletons ever discovered. Estimated to be about 67 million years old, Gus stood nearly four meters tall and measured around 12 meters in length. Previously, the record for the highest amount paid for a dinosaur fossil was held by a Stegosaurus named “Apex,” which sold for just under $45 million in 2024. The identity of Gus’s new owner remains anonymous as bids were placed privately.
