Nigeria, Africa’s most populous nation, has recorded its first confirmed Ebola infection linked to the Bundibugyo variant. Authorities say the case involves a woman who recently arrived in the country by air from Uganda and received care for several days at a private hospital in the Abuja area.
Clinical status and laboratory findings
Samples analysed by public health laboratories returned positive for the Ebola virus of the Bundibugyo lineage. The patient is now isolated and receiving medical treatment, according to the health ministry. An investigation to identify and monitor people who may have been exposed has already begun.

Contact tracing under way
So far, officials have identified 44 individuals who may have had contact with the patient. The list includes healthcare workers, other patients and caregivers, as well as travel-related contacts. These people are being traced and monitored for symptoms as part of the response effort.

The federal government has urged every public and private medical facility in the country — home to roughly 220 million people — to remain on the highest alert and to follow infection-prevention protocols.

Health authorities trace the current outbreak back to mid-May in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Nigeria becomes the fourth African country to report infections caused by the Bundibugyo strain.
Latest figures from the DRC’s health agency put the outbreak impact there at 9,552 recorded cases and 4,602 deaths. In neighbouring and nearby countries, officials have reported smaller clusters: Kenya has documented eight cases with one fatality, while Uganda recorded 20 confirmed infections linked to a patient who came from the DRC, resulting in two deaths. Uganda later announced the end of its outbreak at the end of August after 42 consecutive days without a new case.
