Apple’s Foldable Ambitions
Foldable smartphones have been on the market for some time, with Samsung leading the charge with its Galaxy Z Fold series. Now, Apple is gearing up to introduce its own foldable iPhone, according to predictions by well-regarded analyst Ming-Chi Kuo. Kuo, known for his deep insights into Apple’s supply chain, recently revealed on the social platform X that Apple’s trusted manufacturer, Foxconn, is expected to kick off the project later this year.
Uncertainties in the Production Line
Despite the excitement surrounding Apple’s foray into foldable devices, several uncertainties linger, particularly regarding the components. Kuo notes that many aspects, including the hinge design crucial for foldable phones, are yet to be finalized. The complexity of the hinge, which ensures the phone folds smoothly without damaging the internal components, poses a significant challenge in the manufacturing process.
Screen Insights Offer Clues
One of the few components with determined specifications is the display. Kuo points out that the foldable iPhone will feature a flexible screen supplied by Samsung Display (SDC). This choice is hardly surprising given SDC’s expertise and the high quality of their existing panels. Kuo also mentioned that the supplier plans to build a capacity for producing seven to eight million units of these displays annually. However, full capacity might not be reached this year, as the actual production is expected to span only a few months in 2026.
Expected Premium Pricing
Based on the information from Kuo, Apple has ordered between 15 to 20 million units of the foldable iPhone. This volume likely reflects the expected demand over two to three years rather than just for the launch year. The relatively limited production suggests a high price point for the foldable iPhone, with estimates ranging between $2,000 to $2,500. Despite the steep price, the combination of Apple’s brand appeal and the novelty of a foldable design is expected to attract strong consumer interest.
Innovations and Challenges Ahead
Kuo’s forecasts also touch on other potential features and challenges. He anticipates the foldable iPhone might include a Touch ID integrated into the power button, as the slim design may not accommodate Face ID technology. The device is expected to be around 9 to 9.5 mm thick when folded and roughly 4.5 to 4.8 mm when unfolded. In terms of design, it will likely fold along its length, similar to the Galaxy Z Fold, featuring a 7.8-inch inner screen without a visible crease and a 5.5-inch outer display.
Regarding the materials, Kuo suggests a combination of stainless steel and a titanium alloy for the hinge, which would also match the device’s casing. For its power needs, the foldable iPhone could rely on high-density battery technology, akin to what is anticipated in the "iPhone Air" set to release in September.
The AI Factor
Kuo also hints at a significant push towards integrating more advanced AI capabilities, possibly making the upcoming foldable iPhone a true AI-driven device. This would mark a significant step for Apple, which has lagged behind competitors in AI integration. Whether these advancements will align with the high-quality standards expected by Apple and its users by the fall of 2026 remains an open question.
Reintroducing Touch ID
The inclusion of Touch ID, anticipated by Kuo, suggests a pragmatic adaptation to design constraints, potentially marking a return of the feature in a new form factor. This move could cater to users who prefer fingerprint scanning over facial recognition for quick access.
