AVM is set to revamp the functionality of its Fritzbox routers with the rollout of FritzOS 8.20, which brings about 40 new features and improvements. This update focuses on enhancing user experience across various fronts, including smart home management, internet connectivity, and user interface optimization.

### Enhanced Smart Home Capabilities

FritzOS 8.20 introduces several new features that aim to make managing smart home devices easier. One of the notable upgrades is to the FritzSmart Control 440, a four-button switch that now supports advanced functionalities. Users can control all features of the FritzSmart Thermo 302 heating controller and, after the update, adjust not only the lighting on and off or dimming but also the color temperature of compatible bulbs. Additionally, users can now activate or deactivate routines directly via the four-button switch, which can also respond to various other triggers such as calls, temperature adjustments, or specific function activations.

For those utilizing balcony power stations, the update is particularly beneficial. The FritzSmart Energy 250 intelligent power sensor now allows these users to monitor their feed-in power through a digital electricity meter. This data is conveniently displayed in the energy view on the device detail page under “Smart Home – Devices and Groups.”

Moreover, linking new devices to another AVM router or a FritzSmart Gateway within the smart home system is simplified, enabling direct connections through the Fritzbox’s user interface that acts as the Mesh Master.

### Improved Internet Reliability and Monitoring

The update significantly enhances the reliability of internet connections with the introduction of the “Failsafe” feature. This function allows devices connected via WAN, LAN, or USB ports to use a mobile internet connection in case the primary fiber, DSL, or cable connection fails. This backup isn’t limited to another Fritzbox with a SIM card; users can also connect a mobile internet stick or a smartphone via USB tethering.

In addition to enhanced backup connections, FritzOS 8.20 also offers a more intuitive online monitor. Users can now view data for the past two weeks, identifying which network devices consume the most internet. This feature also allows for the direct selection of devices within the online monitor to track their data usage more efficiently.

### User Interface and Energy Consumption

The new update brings a streamlined approach to managing both energy use and parental controls. FritzOS 8.20 allows for more precise energy management, enabling users to adjust the power consumption of LAN ports independently from the Wi-Fi settings.

Parental controls have also been improved for greater ease of use. Access profiles and connected devices are now displayed on a single page, and the online time tickets feature is easier to find with its dedicated tab. Additionally, the number of available tickets has increased from ten to twelve.

### Rollout Details

The widely used Fritzbox 7590 model, which has been on the market since 2017, will be the first to receive this update. AVM plans to extend this update to additional routers over the coming months, although specific dates have not yet been announced.

With these updates, AVM continues to enhance the functionality and user experience of its devices, ensuring they remain competitive and meet the evolving needs of users in both smart home and connectivity features.
