In his first public statement since the attack, al-Ahmed shared his thoughts with CBS, “It was my soul guiding me,” he explained. He described a spontaneous decision to confront the gunman from behind and wrestle away his firearm. “Everything in my heart and mind worked together to save lives,” al-Ahmed added. He expressed a deep, almost instinctual need to act, driven by a desire not to witness the horror unfolding before him.
The Aftermath and Recovery of a Hero
Al-Ahmed, a father and now an Australian citizen originally from Syria, was with a friend near the beach when the attack targeting holiday celebrators commenced. Despite his injuries, his focus remained on stopping the 50-year-old assailant, the father of the second attacker. “I just wanted to take his weapon away and prevent him from killing innocent people,” he recounted.
His intervention forced the shooter to retreat, preventing further casualties. According to ABC Australia, al-Ahmed has undergone multiple surgeries to treat his injuries.
A Nation Rallies in Support of Their New Hero
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese hailed al-Ahmed as a role model for bravery. His heroism was also recognized by international figures such as King Charles and former U.S. President Donald Trump. A fundraising campaign for his recovery has raised over 2.6 million Australian dollars (approximately 1.5 million euros).
The attack at Bondi Beach tragically claimed the lives of 16 people, including one of the assailants.
