Deadly Attack in Nigerian Village Leaves Multiple Dead, Hostages Taken

During a time when villagers in Nigeria’s most populous country gathered for Friday prayers, armed Islamists launched a horrific attack, leaving a trail of death and terror. The assailants, carrying machetes, knives, and guns, stormed the village and mercilessly killed and abducted numerous people.

“They slaughtered many of us, claiming we do not follow the true teachings of Islam,” a survivor told AFP. The attackers are believed to be members of Lakurawa, an extremist group known for its violent tactics.

Following the initial onslaught, a clash broke out between the Lakurawa group and a rival Islamist faction. This confrontation resulted in further civilian casualties and abductions, as reported by eyewitnesses and local officials.

“The exact number of those kidnapped is unknown, but around 80 of our people have been taken, and many have fled the area,” a relative of one of the kidnapped victims shared with AP.

Experts identify Lakurawa as a branch of the jihadist Islamic State (IS) group, which blends religious extremism with organized crime. This group not only operates in Nigeria but has also spread its influence to neighboring countries.

In Nigeria, attacks on civilians are a frequent tragedy, often targeting individuals for ransom. Besides religiously motivated groups, numerous gangs, locally termed “bandits,” engage in kidnappings and extortion, contributing to the country’s security challenges.
