Following a relentless twelve-hour downpour in southern Spain, a tragic toll has emerged, with at least three lives lost due to severe flooding. The deluge, primarily affecting the province of Málaga, unleashed chaos, transforming streets into rivers and sweeping away anything in its path.

In the grim aftermath, authorities have reported the discovery of two bodies near Granada and in Málaga. Initially, the floodwaters claimed the life of a man on Sunday. His demise was the first reported, setting a somber tone for the subsequent recoveries.

The Guardia Civil, Spain’s gendarmerie, disclosed details about one of the victims, a young man of 20. He was tragically swept away by a river while attempting to cross it on his motorcycle near Granada. His body was found approximately three kilometers from the crossing point.

Meanwhile, in Málaga, the situation was no less dire. The body of a man was found on Sunday, his van overtaken by the flood. His companion, initially missing, was later found deceased, adding to the toll and the community’s grief.

Rainfall Ravages Beyond Málaga

The impact of the torrential rains was not confined to Málaga. The eastern regions, including Murcia and the coastal areas near Valencia, also experienced significant flooding. In response to the widespread devastation, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez urged the population to exercise “utmost caution” amid these hazardous conditions.

This recent calamity is part of a broader pattern of extreme weather events affecting Spain, a country grappling with the harsh realities of climate change. In recent years, Spain has seen a marked increase in both scorching heatwaves and severe rainstorms, the latter of which particularly affected Valencia last October.
