Three fatalities and tens of thousands without power encapsulate the grim aftermath of Winter Storm Johannes in Northern Europe. Although the winds have subsided, the region still faces significant challenges.

In a tragic turn of events, Winter Storm Johannes claimed three lives in Sweden. According to news agency reports, falling trees during the storm were responsible for these fatalities. One of the deceased was a utility worker, who was fatally injured during field operations aimed at restoring power.

More than 140,000 households in Sweden, Norway, and Finland experienced power outages due to the storm’s fury, with the majority of these outages reported in Finland. A local power company has indicated that it might not be until Monday that power is fully restored to all affected customers.

Travel Chaos Ensues

While the storm eased on Sunday, it continued to disrupt travel across the region. Many train connections were cancelled in Sweden and Finland, and numerous flights and ferries were either canceled or faced significant delays. Some travelers were even forced to spend the night in trains, a situation highlighted in a report by broadcaster SVT.

As depicted near Delsbo, numerous trees fell onto power lines, exacerbating the storm’s impact on infrastructure and delaying recovery efforts.
