Accepting an invitation from her counterpart Amir Ohana, Julia Klöckner is set for a three-day visit to Israel. The CDU politician’s itinerary is packed with high-profile meetings including discussions with the Knesset President and other significant political figures.

The agenda for these discussions, as detailed by the Bundestag, will focus on strengthening bilateral ties, assessing the regional conditions, and addressing geopolitical challenges. Cybersecurity measures for the protection of parliaments will also be a crucial topic of conversation.

In addition to these meetings, Klöckner is scheduled to interact with Opposition Leader Jair Lapid and members of the German-Israeli friendship group in the Knesset. An essential part of her visit includes paying homage at Yad Vashem to the approximately six million Jews murdered by the Nazis.

Addressing the Surge of Antisemitism

Klöckner’s visit also includes a stop at the Nova Festival Memorial, which commemorates the victims of the Hamas terrorist attack on October 7, 2023. In an op-ed for Tagesspiegel, she expressed her concerns about how this attack has mainstreamed antisemitism globally.

She noted that the attack was even celebrated on German streets, highlighting a disturbing resurgence of antisemitism. “Antisemitism was never completely eradicated here, but since that dreadful day in October, it has experienced a rampant revival,” Klöckner articulated. She condemned the brutal acts of murder and abduction by Hamas as events that have caused societal barriers against such hate to crumble.
