Google’s Latest Innovation: The Pixel Watch 4

Google’s journey into the smartwatch market has been nothing short of meteoric. Despite entering the fray just three years ago, the tech giant has quickly caught up with competitors. The previous iteration, the Pixel Watch 3, achieved top marks alongside Apple’s offerings, and the new Pixel Watch 4 is set to raise the bar even higher.

A Closer Look at the Pixel Watch 4’s Upgrades

Enhanced Display for a Brighter View

The Pixel Watch 4 retains a similar aesthetic to its predecessor, with the weight of both the 41-mm and 45-mm variants unchanged. However, the introduction of the Actua-360 display marks a significant improvement. This new screen design not only curves like the protective Gorilla Glass 5 but also offers a 10% larger visible area and a 15% reduced bezel. This results in a near borderless appearance, especially noticeable under bright lighting conditions, where the display shines up to 50% brighter than the previous model, reaching up to 3000 nits.

Extended Battery Life for the Long Haul

Under the hood, the Pixel Watch 4 is powered by the second generation Qualcomm Snapdragon W5 chipset, featuring a Cortex‑M55 coprocessor. While the speed increase might not be apparent, these new components, along with 6% and 8% larger batteries in the different models, significantly enhance battery life. The 45-mm model can now last up to 40 hours with the always-on display active, a substantial increase from its predecessor. Recharging is also more efficient, with a 15-minute charge restoring about 50% battery life and a full charge achieved in just an hour.

Innovative Side Charging

Google introduces a novel side charging method with the Pixel Watch 4, which involves a docking system using two large pins for faster, more efficient power transfer. This method reduces heat generation during charging and frees up space on the underside of the watch for additional sensors. For the first time, the battery and display components in the Pixel Watch are replaceable, enhancing the device’s repairability.

Navigation and Connectivity Enhancements

The Pixel Watch 4 boasts significant upgrades in navigation accuracy thanks to its dual-frequency GPS, a feature absent in previous models. This enhancement allows for more precise and stable location tracking. Connectivity also sees an improvement, with the inclusion of Bluetooth 6 and Wi-Fi 7 standards, ensuring faster and more reliable connections.

AI Features and Fitness Tracking

While the Pixel Watch 4 does not introduce new sensors beyond a new skin temperature sensor, it does leverage improved algorithms that enhance various functionalities like sleep analysis, which is now 18% more accurate. However, some fitness tracking features, such as recognizing rowing machine workouts, remain unimproved.

Limitations and Market Comparison

Despite its advancements, the Pixel Watch 4 still guarantees only three years of updates, which is less than what rivals Apple and Samsung offer. This limitation might affect its long-term appeal compared to other brands that provide longer support.

Region-Specific Features

Some of the Pixel Watch 4’s new features, including emergency satellite calls and an AI health coach, are initially available only in the US, which might limit its appeal in other markets.

The Pixel Watch 4, with its state-of-the-art display, enhanced durability, and improved navigation capabilities, represents a significant technological leap from its predecessors. However, when it comes to health and fitness functionalities, the improvements might not be compelling enough for users satisfied with the previous model.
