These Earbuds Pack a Big Surprise: Find Out Why They’re No Small Wonder!

Google’s recent launch alongside the Pixel 10 smartphones and Pixel Watch 4 included the introduction of the Pixel Buds 2a. These earbuds are a more budget-friendly alternative to their Pro 2 siblings, priced 100 Euros cheaper. The question that arises is whether this cost cut reflects a significant drop in quality or if the Pixel Buds 2a represents a true bargain.

### Design and Comfort: A Familiar Fit with a Compact Twist

The Pixel Buds 2a maintain a design very similar to the Pro 2 version, ensuring they fit just as comfortably and securely in the ear. One of the standout features, however, is the notably smaller charging case. Its dimensions of 50 × 24.5 × 57.2 millimeters allow it to fit effortlessly into the small watch pockets of jeans, making it incredibly portable.

### Battery Life: Compact Size Comes at a Cost

Google achieved the compactness of the charging case by omitting components for wireless charging and reducing battery capacity. This modification means the case provides only 13 to 17 hours of charge, depending on whether active noise cancellation (ANC) is used, compared to the 22 and 36 hours offered by the Pro 2’s case. The earbuds themselves last about 7 to 10 hours per charge, trailing the Pro version by approximately two hours. Although this requires more frequent, wired charging, it might be a reasonable trade-off for those who prioritize a lower price point and can manage with the slightly reduced usability.

### Sound Quality: Close, but Slightly Muted

When it comes to audio performance, the Pixel Buds 2a come close to their more expensive counterparts. They deliver strong bass for their size, which is notably present even at lower volumes. The highs are clear, although sometimes they overshadow the somewhat subdued mids. Overall, the sound quality is slightly more muted compared to the Pro 2, but still quite satisfactory. Moreover, users can tweak the sound to their preference using the equalizer settings in the app.

### Active Noise Cancellation and Transparency Mode

The active noise cancellation feature of the Pixel Buds 2a does a decent job at damping consistent, moderate background noises like traffic sounds behind a closed window or a humming refrigerator. However, it struggles with higher-pitched noises such as keyboard clacking and is less effective in windy conditions. The transparency mode is functional but comes with a noticeable background hiss and can make conversations in noisy environments challenging.

### Pricing Perspective: Potential for a Better Deal

Initially priced at 150 Euros, the Pixel Buds 2a might seem steep given the compromises in battery life, sound quality, and features when compared to other models in the market such as the Nothing Ear or Huawei Freebuds Pro 4. However, the Pixel Buds Pro 2 are also available for just 30 Euros more, which makes the 2a less appealing unless their price drops. Potential buyers might find it worthwhile to wait for promotional pricing, especially around holiday seasons, when better deals are likely to emerge.

In summary, the Pixel Buds 2a are best suited for Android users looking for lightweight, comfortable earbuds paired with an ultra-compact charging case. While they offer a reasonable alternative for those on a budget, users should be prepared for some compromises in sound and functionality.
