An Incident at Sea: The “Ocean Viking” Under Fire

On a recent Sunday afternoon, the Mediterranean was the scene of a disturbing maritime incident involving the “Ocean Viking,” a rescue ship operated by the European NGO SOS Méditerranée. The ship, which was in international waters approximately 40 miles north of the Libyan coast, reportedly came under fire from the Libyan Coast Guard. The crew of the “Ocean Viking” had just completed the rescue of 87 individuals from distress at sea and was searching for more survivors when the incident occurred.

According to SOS Méditerranée, a Libyan patrol boat approached and demanded, in Arabic, that the “Ocean Viking” leave the area—an unlawful request given the location in international waters. Without any prior warning, gunfire erupted from the patrol boat, with two individuals firing continuously at the rescue ship for about 20 minutes, even circling around it during the assault.

### A Detailed Account of the Attack

Remarkably, despite the severity of the attack, there were no injuries reported among the crew or the rescued individuals on board. However, the vessel itself sustained significant damage. SOS Méditerranée’s statement detailed “bullet holes at head level” and “severely damaged lifeboats” as a result of the onslaught. In response to the immediate danger, the crew issued a distress call and alerted NATO forces.

The NGO also released a video capturing the harrowing moments of the attack, emphasizing the gravity and intent behind the actions of the Libyan Coast Guard. The organization denounced the incident as a “targeted attack” and called for a thorough investigation into the matter. Moreover, SOS Méditerranée strongly criticized ongoing European cooperation with the Libyan Coast Guard, citing a history of reckless behavior that endangers lives at sea and flagrantly violates human rights and international maritime law.

### Contrasting Perspectives: The Libyan Coast Guard’s Response

In contrast to the account provided by SOS Méditerranée, a spokesperson for the Libyan Coast Guard acknowledged the occurrence of an incident but offered a significantly different version of events. The spokesperson claimed that the forces had only fired warning shots into the air and accused European NGOs operating in the region of exaggerating complaints against the Libyan Coast Guard.

The spokesperson further criticized the presence of NGO ships in or near Libyan waters, suggesting that they encourage human smuggling operations. According to the spokesperson, smugglers direct their boats toward the NGO vessels, facilitating the perilous journey of migrants attempting to cross the Mediterranean.

Each year, thousands of migrants risk the dangerous sea crossing from North Africa, primarily departing from Libya or Tunisia, often leading to tragic accidents. The contentious interactions between European NGOs and the Libyan Coast Guard highlight the complex challenges in managing migration and conducting rescue operations in this volatile maritime region.
