Opening with a Bang and Closing with Insight

The festival’s schedule is packed with intriguing films starting with the opening feature, "Run Amok," a standout from the Sundance Film Festival. Directed by NB Mager and featuring a cast including Patrick Wilson and Molly Ringwald, this film delves into a teenager’s unique response to a school tragedy through the staging of a musical. The closing film, "Public Access," directed by David Shadrack Smith, offers a nostalgic look back at the heyday of New York’s public access television in the 1970s and ’80s.

Special Tributes and Premieres

A major highlight of this year’s LESFF is the 25th-anniversary screening of "Ghost World," directed by Terry Zwigoff. This cult classic, which stars Thora Birch and Scarlett Johansson, captures the essence of teenage angst and transition. The screening promises additional excitement with some cast members participating in a live Q&A session.

New projects are also in the spotlight. The festival’s "Stay Indie Project" development lab will present the New York City premiere of "The Ark," a poignant exploration of a family’s disrupted life in eastern Ukraine during the 2022 Russian invasion.

Other notable screenings include "Homunculus," a surreal comedy from Owen Kibby, and "Occupy Cannes," a documentary by Lily Hayes Kaufman that explores the struggle for recognition of independent art at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival. The feature lineup is rounded out with films like "The Hand That Feeds" by Mtume Gant, and "Danny Is My Boyfriend" by Lucy Sandler and Mechi Lakatos, among others.

The film jury this year includes a mix of actors and filmmakers who bring a wealth of experience from various corners of the industry. Notables such as Mamoudou Athie, Lucas Hedges, and Constance Zimmer will be judging the entries, providing their insights into the innovative works showcased at the festival.

In addition to full-length films, the festival will premiere over 30 short films, offering audiences a glimpse into the dynamic world of short-format storytelling. This segment provides a platform for emerging filmmakers to display their talents in a concise form.
