Behind the Scenes of a Unique Creation
Arturo and Roy Ambriz, the visionary minds behind the Adult Swim series "Women Wearing Shoulder Pads," helm this project. Their studio, Cinema Fantasia, gained recognition for its original series "Frankelda’s Book of Spooks," which aired on Cartoon Network Latin America in 2021. This series, consisting of five episodes, introduced viewers to Frankelda, a ghostly figure and an aspiring horror writer who narrated chilling tales involving children and paranormal events.
"I Am Frankelda" serves as a prequel to this series, exploring the backstory of the enigmatic character. The film delves into Frankelda’s early years in 19th-century Mexico, where she struggles as a talented writer whose dark stories are often overlooked and dismissed. Despite societal pressures to silence her, Frankelda’s determination remains unshaken.
Delving into Dark Realms
The narrative takes a fantastical turn as Frankelda is drawn into her subconscious, bringing her monstrous creations to life. Accompanied by Herneval, a prince caught between the realms of dreams and nightmares, she embarks on a quest to maintain the balance between fiction and reality. As her journey unfolds, she faces the malevolent writer Procustes and his cohorts, who are intent on overtaking her imaginative world.
The bond between Frankelda and Herneval strengthens, presenting both salvation and peril. In a race against time, Frankelda must confront a love that transcends existence and reclaim her voice to avert the impending doom orchestrated by dark forces.
The Artistic Ensemble
The film features a talented team including Ana Coronilla and Bruce Zick as production designers, Beto Petiches as animation director, and Irene Melis along with Fernanda G. Manzur overseeing cinematography. The evocative original score crafted by Kevin Smithers complements the eerie yet captivating atmosphere of the film. Voice talents such as Mireya Mendoza, Arturo Mercado Jr., and Luis Leonardo Suarez bring the animated characters to life with their compelling performances.
Experience the Magic
"I Am Frankelda" will be available on Netflix in both the original Spanish version with subtitles and an English-language dub, catering to a global audience. This release not only highlights the rich cultural heritage of Mexico but also showcases the expansive possibilities within the realm of stop-motion animation. As the release date approaches, the anticipation builds for this musical horror spectacle that promises to enchant and terrify in equal measure.
