From Critic to Director: Peter Debruge’s New Role
Peter Debruge is no stranger to the world of cinema. Having served as co-chief film critic at Variety, he has written around 2,000 reviews and has been deeply embedded in the film industry for two decades. Debruge, a Texas native, also holds a personal connection to the festival. He studied film at the University of Texas at Austin and edited the entertainment section of The Daily Texan, where he worked alongside former SXSW Film head Matt Dentler. His roots in Austin and his extensive experience in film criticism make him a unique fit for this new role.
Celebrating Claudette Godfrey’s Legacy
Under Claudette Godfrey’s stewardship, the SXSW Film & TV Festival has not only thrived but also expanded to include television content. Greg Rosenbaum, SVP of Programming at SXSW, praised her for creating a program that’s globally relevant and focused on discovery. Godfrey’s tenure saw the premiere of notable films like “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” which debuted at SXSW and later won the Academy Award for Best Picture.
Debruge’s Vision for SXSW
As Debruge prepares to step into his new role, he reflects on his long history with SXSW and his excitement about returning to the festival that holds a special place in his heart. He expressed his gratitude towards Variety for the invaluable experiences that shaped his understanding of the film industry. Notably, Debruge has been recognized internationally for his contributions to the arts, having been knighted in France in the Order of Arts and Letters, and has served on juries for several major film festivals including Cannes.
