Within the ranks of Ukraine’s military, the hidden struggle with gambling addiction is emerging as a profound challenge, exacerbated by limited leisure options and the strains of ongoing conflict. This growing concern has prompted both government actions and personal tales of struggle to surface, highlighting the unique pressures faced by soldiers.
The Silent Battle: Addiction Among Soldiers
For Andriy, a pseudonym of a middle-aged soldier who prefers anonymity, gambling has become an engulfing pastime. Over a virtual interview, with his face partially concealed, he shares his descent into gambling which started 15 years ago with simple sports bets. His addiction relapsed after joining the army, where restricted movement and limited recreational activities made gambling on sports a tempting escape from the rigors of military life.
“The addiction pushes everything else to the background,” Andriy explains. “You’re constantly drawn into gambling more and more, until you realize it has consumed your life.”
Addressing the Crisis
Recognizing the severity of the issue, the Ukrainian government is stepping up its efforts. Following a poignant petition by Pawlo Petrytschenko, a frontline soldier, which quickly gathered 25,000 signatures, the president was compelled to respond. Recent legislative efforts aim to curb gambling among military personnel by blocking their access to both online and offline gambling platforms. This initiative builds on existing restrictions that were already applied to 13,500 registered pathological gamblers.
However, the effectiveness of these measures is under scrutiny. Andriy doubts that blocking official platforms will significantly hinder access, citing his own use of unregistered international gambling sites and cryptocurrencies for transactions.

Why Soldiers Turn to Gambling
The allure of gambling for soldiers, who often face stark conditions and limited personal time, is notably strong. “In the military, where options for relaxation are scarce, gambling becomes a readily accessible solace,” notes Tetiana Synitska, a psychologist with Prostir Schyttja, an organization supporting gambling addicts. Unlike civilians who have various outlets for leisure, soldiers confined to barracks are more susceptible to the distractions offered by online betting.
The Broader Implications
There are also broader security concerns. Deputy Minister for Digital Transformation, Natalja Denikejewa, expressed worries about soldiers’ personal data potentially being accessed by foreign entities, specifically unauthorized casinos believed to be operated by Russia. “When soldiers gamble, they expose personal data which could compromise not only their own safety but also national security,” she stated in a recent interview.
The ongoing initiatives and the stories from the front lines like Andriy’s illustrate the complex interplay between the stress of military service and the escape offered by gambling. While the government takes steps to shield its soldiers from exploitation through gambling, the underlying issues of leisure scarcity and mental health support remain pressing challenges.
