The romantic dramedy, featuring Lewis Pullman and Maya Hawke, explores the tumultuous relationship of a couple undergoing therapy. Their journey takes an extraordinary turn when they encounter mystical twin healers, whose interventions link the couple’s emotional fluctuations with global phenomena, such as earthquakes and stock market flutters.
Behind the Scenes and the Path Forward
‘Wishful Thinking’ marks Graham Parkes’ debut as a feature film director, and it boasts a diverse cast including Amita Rao, Randall Park, Eric Rahill, Jake Shane, Kate Berlant, and Kerri Kenney-Silver. The production was spearheaded by Lewis Pullman through Buckwild Pictures, alongside Dan Gedman and Matt Smith of Highway 10, which also financed the project, with Kara Durrett of Pinky Promise. The executive production team includes Alyssa Roehrenbeck, Sarah Mather, Jessamine Burgum, Cameron Fuller, and Graham Patrick Martin.
While a release date remains on the horizon, Sony Pictures Classics expressed enthusiasm for the film’s potential impact, citing its blend of romance, humor, and unpredictability as key elements that modern audiences crave. They anticipate that the film’s theatrical experience will resonate well, especially given the performances by Maya and Lewis.
Graham Parkes shared his excitement about joining forces with Sony Pictures Classics, a company he respects deeply for its nearly 35-year history of supporting independent films, including many of his personal favorites.
Expanding Horizons
Beyond ‘Wishful Thinking’, Sony Pictures Classics has been actively acquiring titles that have generated buzz across various festivals this year. Recent releases include the BAFTA-winning ‘I Swear’, and a lineup of anticipated films such as Haifaa Al-Mansour’s ‘Unidentified’, David Wain’s ‘Gail Daughtry and the Celebrity Sex Pass’, and several other promising projects from Sundance and Cannes, including Pedro Almodóvar’s ‘Bitter Christmas’.
The distribution deal for ‘Wishful Thinking’ was facilitated by UTA Independent Film Group, which represented the filmmakers in the negotiations, highlighting a strategic move to broaden the reach of this unique romantic dramedy to a global audience.
As Sony Pictures Classics gears up to introduce ‘Wishful Thinking’ to theaters, both the film industry and moviegoers alike are poised to witness the innovative blend of storytelling and cinematic appeal that the film promises to deliver.
