Following a marathon session to iron out last-minute concerns, the Meade County/Brandenburg Industrial Development Authority and Meade County Fiscal Court entered into an agreement with Arch Chemicals to purchase 551 acres of property for the sum of $6 million.

Concerns delay special called meeting

At the special called meeting on Dec. 27, Meade County Attorney Darren Sipes recommended that Fiscal Court delay the final reading and approval of a resolution to purchase real estate and enter into a loan transaction with First Federal Savings Bank until some last minute details were settled. He described it as possibly overkill, but the need to settle any environmental concerns about the property’s use when it was owned by Olin was essential before the agreement could be finalized. Special meeting continues; issue resolved

Following a 90-minute recess of the special called meeting of the Meade County Fiscal Court Dec. 27, the parties reconvened to continue discussion of the issue of possible hazardous material buried on the property Meade County is purchasing from Arch Chemicals (551 acres). Meade County loses a legend

James Ralph Watts died Dec. 27, 2005, at home. He was 88.

Watts was a graduate of the Jefferson School of Law, later the University of Louisville College of Law, and a practicing attorney in Meade County for 61 years. He served as Meade County attorney for 36 years and trial commissioner for 17 years. He was an honorary member of the Kentucky Bar Association.

Fiscal Court completes year-end business

A quorum of the Meade County Fiscal Court met at 10 a.m. on Dec. 29 to finish three items of routine business that had been put aside in all the excitement of finalizing the ARCH property deal before the end of the year. Approval was needed for jail bond money transfers and payments, as well as the sheriff’s office 2006 salary cap. Click Here For Full Story
