OPINION

Letter to the Editor

To the Messenger:

This letter is in response to a letter several weeks ago about our gravel roads around the county. I now know I am not alone in the thought that too many people fly back and forth all day long at speeds way over the 10 mph posted speed. The dust gererated by these people has unfairly turned me into a prisoner in my own home and now that school is back in session all our children are at extreme risk of being struck by one of these speeders.

In my opinion...
Good things about Meade County

I remember back in the early 1970s, my parents decided to move from Jefferson County, where we had lived for many years, to Meade County. My father had been commuting to Hardin County to work for as long as I could remember. There were several factors that caused us to make the move. The first was education. Jefferson County was about to implement busing students all over Jefferson County to achieve a racial balance in their schools. I had attended Watson Lane Elementary, which was two blocks from my house. I walked to school. Then, when it came time for middle school, two blocks in the other direction was Frost Middle School. Again, I walked to school. My friends and I were looking forward to attending Valley High School together. Then busing came about, and we found that we could be going to high school just about anywhere in Jefferson County. That was the decision maker for my parents. Move out of Jefferson County. Avoid that whole mess. Live closer to work. So why Meade County? That was a question that I never asked my parents. But I figured it out for myself.
