The Final Days of Kamel Mohammad al-Ajrami
Kamel Mohammad al-Ajrami, a father of six, tragically passed away on October 10, 2025, while detained in Soroka Hospital in Israel. His journey into the Israeli detention system began on October 25, 2024, when he was taken from Gaza, marking the start of a harrowing year that would ultimately lead to his death.
A recent encounter with a relative of mine, who had been released from an Israeli detention camp, shed light on the distressing conditions within these facilities. This relative recounted an incident on September 30, 2025, just days before al-Ajrami’s death. He described how Israeli prison guards conducted a violent raid in their cell at the Negev Prison, firing rubber-coated bullets at the detainees, a common practice that many former prisoners have reported.
The violence escalated when al-Ajrami was shot in the head. As he lay bleeding, the other detainees’ pleas for medical assistance were coldly rejected by the guards, who accused them of lying. The following day, al-Ajrami was finally taken away on a stretcher; that was the last time my relative saw him alive.
A Pattern of Tragedy in Detention
Unfortunately, the death of al-Ajrami is not an isolated incident. Since October 2023, Palestinian human rights organizations report that at least 80 Palestinian detainees have died under Israeli custody. These deaths are attributed to various forms of mistreatment, including torture and medical negligence.
Despite the release of over 1,700 detainees, more than 9,000 Palestinians remain held in Israeli prisons and detention camps, many under administrative detention. This form of detention allows for holding individuals without charge or trial, essentially treating them as hostages. Additionally, Israel has been known to withhold Palestinian bodies, sometimes for decades, in facilities referred to chillingly as “cemeteries of numbers.”
Unanswered Questions and Ongoing Issues
Following al-Ajrami’s death, detainees inquired about his condition, only to be falsely reassured that he was “doing well.” Requests for comment from the Israeli Prison Service have been met with silence, leaving many critical questions about the treatment of detainees unanswered.
This ongoing issue highlights the severe and often overlooked human rights challenges within the Israeli detention system, raising significant concerns about the treatment of Palestinians and the conditions within these facilities. As the international community continues to watch, the plight of detainees like Kamel Mohammad al-Ajrami serves as a grim reminder of the human cost of this enduring conflict.
