Despite an officially declared ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, violence has not ceased in the Gaza Strip. Recent incidents have led to the deaths of several individuals, including a freelance worker associated with the World Health Organization (WHO).

Details of the Recent Conflict

On a recent Monday, the Gaza Strip witnessed severe violence resulting in the deaths of at least twelve individuals and injuries to many. A significant incident occurred east of the Maghazi refugee camp in central Gaza, where at least ten people lost their lives and others were wounded. According to Palestinian authorities, these casualties were the result of Israeli airstrikes.

Local reports also highlight skirmishes involving Palestinians and a militia supported by Israel, which allegedly attempted abductions. During these skirmishes, Israeli drones launched two rockets into a densely populated neighborhood, intensifying the conflict as residents attempted to defend their homes but faced targeted attacks from Israeli troops.

Response to the WHO Worker’s Death

The death of a WHO freelancer early in the week has prompted the organization to temporarily halt the evacuation of severely ill patients from Gaza. WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus announced on the social platform X that the worker was killed during a “security incident,” while two other WHO staff members present were unharmed.

A Fragile Truce

The recent surge in violence underscores the fragile nature of the ceasefire brokered by the United States last October. Both Israel and Hamas accuse each other of breaching this agreement. Since the truce’s inception, the Gaza Health Ministry reports that at least 700 individuals have been killed due to Israeli fire. Meanwhile, Israel reports the deaths of four of its soldiers during the same period.

The ongoing refusal of Hamas to relinquish their arms remains a significant barrier to the implementation of a peace plan proposed by U.S. President Donald Trump.

Impact on the Ground

Leaders of pro-Israel militias have claimed responsibility for the deaths of five Hamas members, labeling the opposition as “Israeli collaborators.” This has further fueled the tensions within the region. Additional Israeli attacks in central Gaza and Gaza City have resulted in more Palestinian casualties, concluding Monday’s toll with at least twelve fatalities.

The incidents have not only highlighted the volatility of the ceasefire but also raised significant concerns about the safety of non-combatants and humanitarian workers in the area.
