In a devastating turn of events, a suicide bomber drove a car filled with explosives into a police facility in Kohat, located in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province of Pakistan. This attack resulted in the death of at least 21 individuals, including five police officers, and injured over 80 others, as reported by the provincial police chief, Zulfikar Hameed.

Details of the Tragic Incident

The assault took place near a mosque where police officers, their families, and civilians were gathered for Friday prayers. After the vehicle crashed into the exterior wall, at least seven armed accomplices of the bomber opened fire. Security forces managed to neutralize one attacker wearing an explosive vest.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif condemned the attack and extended his condolences to the families of the victims. He instructed authorities to expedite rescue operations. Pakistani broadcaster Geo TV aired footage showing panicked individuals fleeing the scene, with lifeless bodies visible on the ground. Emergency vehicles rushed the injured to nearby hospitals.

Terrorist Presence in the Region

No group immediately claimed responsibility for the attack. Notably, the region is known for the activities of the Islamic State’s regional faction and the Pakistani Taliban (TTP), both of whom operate in the Afghan-Pakistani border area.

The security situation has deteriorated over the years. Just earlier in August, a suicide bomber targeted a police station in the Swat Valley within the same province, killing 14 people. The attack occurred amid a demonstration against the rising violence in the area.

Incidents targeting police officers in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa have been frequent in recent months. Pakistan has accused the Taliban-led government in neighboring Afghanistan of providing sanctuary to terrorist groups in the border area, a claim Kabul denies. Tensions between the neighboring countries escalated in the spring of 2026, leading to regular cross-border shelling.
