An accidental detonation at a munitions depot in Myanmar has resulted in the deaths of at least 50 individuals, with dozens more injured. The explosion was reportedly caused by commercial explosives intended for mining.

A tragic explosion in the northeast of Myanmar, close to the Chinese border, has resulted in numerous fatalities. According to the rebels controlling the area, the blast was triggered by an accidental detonation of mining explosives.

Reports from BBC indicate that the explosion caused 55 deaths, including 25 women and 30 men, in the village of Kaung Tat in Namhkan district. Earlier, a district emergency service representative reported 46 deaths, including children, and over 70 injuries.

Extensive Damage to Residential Areas

Local reports mention numerous homes in the vicinity were damaged by the explosion. Rescue teams continue to search for individuals trapped under the debris. The local hospital in Namhkam has reported a critical shortage of blood supplies to treat the injured.

The Ta’ang National Liberation Army (TNLA), one of the most influential ethnic minority groups in the country, stated that the munition depot was under their control. They confirmed that the depot stored commercial explosives intended for use in a quarry operated by the group. The TNLA has expressed condolences to the victims’ families and pledged a thorough investigation into the explosion’s cause.

Ongoing Civil Unrest in Myanmar

Myanmar has been embroiled in a civil war since a military coup in 2021, with the army clashing against a variety of pro-democracy rebel groups and powerful armed ethnic minority factions. Earlier this year, elections were held for the first time since the coup, which observers dismissed as a sham, noting the exclusion of significant opposition.

In March 2025, a severe earthquake with a magnitude of 7.7 struck the Sagaing region, resulting in over 5,000 fatalities. Rescue operations were highly challenging as many affected areas were difficult to access.
