Israel’s government has instructed the military to prepare for a full lockdown of the West Bank following a shooting near Hebron that left two Israeli soldiers dead and three others wounded.

What happened near Hebron

Early on the morning of the attack, two Palestinians opened fire at Israeli soldiers close to Hebron in the occupied West Bank. Israeli officials say the assault killed two soldiers and injured three more. Security forces shot and killed the two assailants at the scene.

The army reported the attackers were armed with an M16 assault rifle and a handgun.

Immediate government and military reaction

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu convened a high-level meeting that included Defence Minister Israel Katz and Chief of General Staff Ejal Zamir. Following that briefing, Netanyahu ordered Hebron to be sealed off and directed the military to ready itself for a comprehensive West Bank blockade.

Security services began what the government described as “extensive arrest waves.” Netanyahu said the forces had foiled a “major attack” and accused the Islamist group Hamas of having planned a large-scale operation aimed at killing civilians. Hamas praised the operation but has not formally claimed responsibility.

Blocking roads and sealing towns

The Israel Defence Forces (IDF) announced that roadblocks were put in place and that Palestinian villages in the area and the surroundings of Hebron had already been cordoned off as part of the containment measures.

Political responses inside Israel

President Isaac Herzog condemned the shooting and wished the wounded a full recovery, warning that Israel continues to face a persistent terror threat that requires decisive responses.

With a parliamentary election scheduled for next Tuesday, a West Bank lockdown is not unprecedented. Security and tough responses to Palestinian violence are central campaign issues, and right-wing politicians often use such events to promise harder measures.

Observers note that the rising violence by radical Israeli settlers against Palestinians in the West Bank has received comparatively little attention from some political leaders. Opinion polls suggest both Netanyahu’s bloc and the opposition may struggle to secure a clear majority in the upcoming vote.
