Over 1,000 Kenyans are reportedly fighting for Russia in Ukraine, often deceived into traveling under false pretenses. Kenya’s Foreign Minister declares an end to these recruitments.

Kenya’s Foreign Minister, Musalia Mudavadi, announced during a press visit in Moscow that Russia has agreed to cease the recruitment of Kenyan nationals for the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. This development follows Mudavadi’s discussions with his Russian counterpart, Sergey Lavrov.

Intelligence from Kenya reveals that over 1,000 Kenyans are currently fighting on the Russian side in Ukraine. Investigations by various media outlets have uncovered that these individuals were recruited by a staffing agency based in Nairobi under the guise of employment opportunities such as sales positions. Subsequently, many were coerced into military involvement.

Ukraine’s own reports have identified more than 1,780 Africans from 36 different countries within the ranks of the Russian forces. The actual figures might be significantly higher due to the clandestine nature of these recruitments.
