A Tragic Loss in the Ranks: The Death of a High-Ranking Russian Commander
In a significant blow to the Russian military hierarchy, Vice Chief of the Marine Infantry, Major General Michail Gudkow, lost his life in a missile attack in the Kursk region near the Ukraine border. Appointed to this high-ranking position by President Vladimir Putin in March, Gudkow’s death marks a notable escalation in the ongoing conflicts at the fringes of Russian territory.
Before his recent promotion, Gudkow had commanded the 155th Marine Infantry Brigade, renowned for its operational capacities. His leadership extended to coordinating maritime infantry with missile and artillery units stationed at coastal batteries. Putin had lauded Gudkow’s war experiences during his promotion, emphasizing the need to replicate his military achievements across other commands.
Continued Conflict at the Border
The Kursk region, which neighbors Ukraine, has been a flashpoint of military tension. From the summer of 2024 to the spring of 2025, parts of this area were under Ukrainian control following a robust offensive by Ukrainian forces in August 2024. The conflict saw the participation of thousands of North Korean soldiers fighting alongside Russian troops against Ukraine, which eventually had to retreat. However, skirmishes in the border areas persist.
Adding to the gravity of the situation, Gudkow is not the first Russian general to be killed since the onset of the Russian offensive into Ukraine in February 2022. His death brings the total number of high-ranking officers confirmed killed to twelve, including those involved in various capacities throughout the conflict zone.
Allegations of War Crimes
The brigade formerly commanded by Gudkow, deployed shortly after the outbreak of the Russian offensive, has been accused by Kyiv of engaging in war crimes. The unit suffered significant losses during the battle for the eastern Ukrainian city of Wuhledar, a testament to the ferocity of the fighting and the controversial tactics reportedly employed.

Ongoing Russian Strikes in Ukraine
Meanwhile, the conflict continues to wreak havoc across various Ukrainian regions. In the southern port city of Odessa, a Russian airstrike claimed two lives when an Iskander missile struck a dock at the port. This attack also left six individuals wounded, according to Oleksij Kuleba, Ukraine’s Deputy Prime Minister.
Elsewhere, the city of Poltawa faced Russian air assaults that resulted in two civilian deaths and injuries to ten others. A recruitment center in the city was also hit. The ongoing air and drone exchanges between the two nations saw Ukraine’s air force intercepting 40 out of 52 Russian drones one night, while Russia claimed to have destroyed 69 Ukrainian drones, primarily in the Belgorod region adjacent to Ukraine.
Further from the direct border conflict, in the Russian region of Lipezk, approximately 400 kilometers southwest of Moscow, a Ukrainian drone attack tragically resulted in the death of a woman. The debris from a downed Ukrainian drone crashed into her house, as confirmed by Igor Artamonow, the regional governor, through a statement on the messaging service Telegram.
