The streets of Iran are witnessing unprecedented protests against the current regime, marking what could be a pivotal moment in the country’s history. Omid Nouripour, the Vice President of the German Bundestag and a member of the Green Party, shared his insights on the situation in an interview with tagesschau24. With Iranian roots himself, Nouripour brings a personal as well as a political perspective to the unfolding events.

Potential for Major Change

According to Nouripour, the protests are more widespread and profound than any since the establishment of the Islamic Republic nearly 50 years ago. He believes that the current system is unsustainable. “It is possible that the people of Iran will finally gain freedom,” he stated emphatically. “Everything is possible. What I would rule out is that the system remains as it is.”

Risks of Military Intervention

While hopeful about the prospect of change, Nouripour cautioned about the potential dangers ahead. He speculated on the possibility of a coup by paramilitary forces, which could lead to a military dictatorship. Such an outcome would be disastrous and underscores the need for effective support and influence from the international community. “It is crucial to try to exert influence and offer help now, so that this movement succeeds and the wrong forces do not end up prevailing,” he explained.

With the protests showing no signs of abating, the world watches closely. The situation remains fluid, and as Nouripour remarked, “It is all possible”—a phrase that captures both the uncertainty and the hope enveloping Iran at this critical juncture.
