Eastern Australia has been grappling with severe flooding, resulting in at least four deaths. An extensive rescue operation is underway, with thousands of emergency service personnel mobilized to assist tens of thousands of residents trapped by the rising waters.
Among the deceased, a 63-year-old man was found in his inundated home in Moto, about 250 kilometers from Sydney. Two others, a 30-year-old man and a 60-year-old woman, died after their vehicles were swept away by the floods. The body of a man around 70 was later retrieved near Coffs Harbour. His vehicle too had been overwhelmed by the floodwaters, and one more individual is currently missing, as reported by ABC News.

In New South Wales, the situation remains critical. The region received half a year’s worth of rain in just three days, according to the Australian Bureau of Meteorology. This unprecedented deluge has left vast areas submerged, forcing residents to seek refuge on rooftops, vehicles, and even bridges.
Approximately 50,000 people are isolated due to the floods, with emergency teams working tirelessly to evacuate them. Since the onset of the crisis earlier in the week, about 600 rescues have been conducted.
The towns of Taree in the Hunter Valley and Port Macquarie on the Mid North Coast are among the hardest hit, with thousands of people cut off from electricity and numerous schools closed.
Challenges for Emergency Responders
The weather system that brought the floods has moved towards Sydney, but water levels are receding slowly, complicating rescue efforts. Over 2,000 rescue workers have been dispatched to assess damage and initiate clean-up operations. The state government has declared a disaster to unlock funds for relief and protection efforts.
Premier Chris Minns praised the efforts of more than 670 rescue operations, highlighting the bravery and logistical prowess of volunteers and professionals who faced dangerous conditions to save lives. Many rescues involved plucking individuals from their rooftops as floodwaters surged below.
Climate Change and Its Impact
Scientists warn that climate change is likely increasing the frequency and intensity of extreme weather events in Australia. Recent months have seen unusually warm ocean temperatures around Australia, contributing to greater atmospheric moisture and heavier rainfall.
