The leaders of the major democratic economies are taking a firm stand to bolster Ukraine, imposing new sanctions targeting Russia’s vital oil and gas sectors. This strategic move was outlined during the recent G7 summit held in Évian, France.
Amidst the scenic backdrop of Évian, the G7 summit became the stage for decisive actions aimed at pressuring Moscow to halt its aggressive military actions against Ukraine. The sanctions focus primarily on crippling the Russian energy exports, a critical source of revenue for the Kremlin.
Global Leaders Rally for Ukraine
Key figures such as the UK’s Prime Minister, Keir Starmer, and Canada’s Prime Minister, Mark Carney, have voiced their countries’ commitments to intensify pressures on Vladimir Putin and his allies. The UK plans to introduce 70 new sanctions measures, including actions against 20 additional tankers from Russia’s ‘shadow fleet’. Similarly, Canada is set to add 162 entities, including individuals, companies, and vessels, to its sanctions list.
Ukraine’s President Joins the G7 Summit
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyj also attended the summit, where he expressed gratitude for the unified support from the G7 nations. “It’s great that everyone understands that Russia will not win and that we need to push Putin to end this war,” Zelenskyj remarked following the discussions.

US President Donald Trump, who has recently been more focused on Iran, declared a shift back to the Ukrainian issue. “Russia should make a deal,” Trump stated on the sidelines of the G7 summit, suggesting that negotiations with Kyiv to end the war should be initiated. The US is poised to reinstate sanctions against Russian oil exports soon, despite having eased some restrictions in the context of the war in Iran just months ago.
Unified European Front and a Window for Diplomacy
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz highlighted the unity among European nations during the summit. With the changing dynamics on the battlefield favoring Kyiv, Merz sees a “window for diplomacy” in the Ukraine conflict. “Despite Russia’s recent attacks, the dynamics have shifted significantly in Ukraine’s favor,” Merz stated, just before the summit commenced.
The G7’s collective decision to provide more military aid to Ukraine, particularly to enhance its air defense capabilities, signifies a robust effort to support Ukraine in the ongoing conflict.
