Apple Unveils "Liquid Glass" Design at WWDC

At the outset of the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), Apple introduced a new unified design across all its operating systems, aptly named "Liquid Glass." This design overhaul brings a fresh look to user interfaces on devices like iPhones, iPads, Mac computers, and even Apple Watches. "Liquid Glass" features more transparent elements that appear to float over other content, marking the first major redesign in Apple’s design language in over a decade—a language that interacts with hundreds of millions of users daily.

The Evolution of Operating System Names

Apple is also transforming how it names its operating systems. Historically, each device type followed its own versioning sequence, such as iOS 18 for iPhone and macOS 16 for Mac computers. Moving forward, Apple will anchor version numbers to the respective year; thus, all systems released this year will include the suffix "26," looking ahead to the next year. This change aims to streamline the naming convention across Apple’s suite of products, of which there are more than a billion in use globally.

Artificial Intelligence Spreads Its Wings

While many hoped for a significant leap in AI capabilities, particularly with Siri, Apple has pushed the major advancements to next year. Despite this delay, the company has embedded new AI features across various apps and functions. These enhancements include real-time translation for video calls and phone conversations, where translations can be displayed as subtitles or spoken by the software. Apple is also introducing the ability to start a Google search from a screenshot, enhancing user interaction with on-screen content.

Delay in Siri’s Evolution

At WWDC 2024, Apple had previously teased a much-improved version of Siri, which would have broader access to personal information and the ability to operate across multiple apps. However, this update has been postponed to next year. Last year, Apple presented detailed scenarios on how the new Siri could be utilized, but in March, they announced the need for additional development time.

Competitive Edge in AI

Apple’s approach to integrating AI differs from its rivals like Google, which showcased its AI software, Gemini, designed to engage in conversations and recognize objects, deeply embedded within smartphones during its own developer conference. Unlike Google, Apple is enhancing individual features with AI, such as the ability for developers to integrate Apple’s AI language models into their applications. This access could negate the need for developers to form separate partnerships with AI chatbot providers like OpenAI’s ChatGPT.

Bridging the Gap Between iPad and Mac

Significant changes are coming to the iPad’s operating system, making it more akin to a Mac. The new system incorporates a menu bar and enhanced capabilities for multitasking with multiple app windows. Industry analyst Avi Greengart from Techsponential described it as essentially transforming the iPad into a touchscreen Mac but with a different selection of apps.

Enhancements in Enterprise Technology: Vision Pro

The Vision Pro, Apple’s advanced computer glasses, is getting optimized for corporate use. The upcoming operating system update—jumping from version 2 to 26—will simplify multi-user access and collaborative projects, such as working on virtual vehicle models. Given its starting price of 4,000 euros, businesses are a key target market for the Vision Pro. The device captures its surroundings with cameras and displays them in high quality on the screens in front of the user’s eyes. With the new system, it will also learn to anchor virtual widgets, like clocks or picture frames, in specific physical locations, visible whenever the user is wearing the headset in that space.
