The Escalating Refugee Crisis in Sudan
For over two years, a brutal civil war has ravaged Sudan, forcing an astounding 14 million people to flee within their own country. The conflict, driven by power struggles between two generals, has plunged the nation into chaos, resulting in the world’s most significant migration crisis. Many have sought refuge in neighboring countries, but the journey and life beyond Sudan’s borders are fraught with hardships and uncertainty.

Lives in Limbo: The Struggle of Sudanese Refugees
In the Zamzam refugee camp located in Darfur, western Sudan, daily life is a constant battle for survival. Images from Reuters capture the desperation of mothers like Halima, who queue for hours to secure just a few packets of vitamin powder for their children. “Our life is very hard,” Halima shares. “We have fled six times, each time hoping to escape the violence only to have it follow us.” Her children are malnourished, and the food available is barely enough to feed the infants.
The scale of the crisis is staggering. In Khartoum, the capital, the situation is dire. Laurent Bukera of the UN World Food Programme reports extensive destruction, limited access to clean water, and outbreaks of cholera. “The needs are massive,” he states, describing some areas as ghost towns.
The Exodus to Egypt: A Fraught Escape
Approximately four million Sudanese have managed to leave the horrors of war behind, with thousands more attempting to cross the border every day, according to the UN Refugee Agency. Many end up in Egypt, like Sahar, a young engineer who was about to start her doctoral thesis when the war broke out. Now, she struggles to rebuild her life in Cairo under challenging conditions. “Finding work is very difficult with so many refugees here,” she explains. “Keeping in touch with family scattered across different countries is hard, and we’re just trying to build a new life here without much help.”
The Plight of Illegal Status and the Fear of Deportation
In Egypt, many Sudanese refugees share cramped living spaces and take up any available jobs, often as day laborers. Without proper residence permits, they live in constant fear of deportation. Bahr, a 25-year-old refugee, describes his precarious situation: “We were eight people in a single-room apartment. Whenever the police came, we had to run because they would deport us on the spot since we were all in the country illegally.”
The recent tightening of asylum laws in Egypt has led to increased deportations, confirms Mohamed Lotfy from the Egyptian Commission for Rights and Freedoms (ECRF). “Many Sudanese no longer feel safe here and are fleeing again, most heading towards Europe,” he adds.
A Perilous Journey to Europe
Bahr eventually decided to leave Egypt, embarking on a perilous journey facilitated by smugglers through the mountains to Libya, and then by sea to Europe. “The smugglers treated us like animals, not humans,” he recounts. “We were pelted with stones, and though we hoped for better, Libya was worse than Sudan and Egypt combined.” Aware of the risks, Bahr and others like him faced a harrowing decision. “We knew it was dangerous, but staying was just as perilous. We told ourselves it was either make it or die trying.”
Having reached Greece, Bahr finds himself in yet another uncertain situation, far better than the war and dire conditions back home but still devoid of real prospects as a refugee.
The Continuing Struggle
The ongoing civil war in Sudan and the resultant refugee crisis highlight the immense human cost of conflict and the complex challenges faced by displaced populations. As international attention fluctuates, the needs of millions remain, illustrating the urgent requirement for sustained humanitarian support and a coordinated global response to ensure the safety and dignity of all displaced individuals.
