At Least Six Dead in Swiss Bus Fire: Tragic Incident Unfolds

In a shocking event from Switzerland, a line bus caught fire leading to the tragic death of at least six individuals. The incident, which occurred in the small town of Kerzers in the Canton of Fribourg, also left five others injured, including an emergency medical technician.

Local authorities, based on preliminary investigations, suspect that the fire may have been set intentionally. During a late-night press briefing, police revealed that they had received reports suggesting that an individual had spread gasoline inside the bus before setting it alight. However, these claims have yet to be verified formally by the police.

Details of the Catastrophe

The bus, operated by PostAuto, which primarily serves rural regions in Switzerland, was en route from Düdingen to Kerzers. The fire reportedly started shortly before the bus reached its final stop in Kerzers, located approximately 26 kilometers west of Bern. Eyewitnesses shared videos on social media that displayed the bus engulfed in flames accompanied by a large plume of smoke. Firefighters responded to the scene and extinguished the fire, but the bus was completely destroyed and later covered with white tarps to block it from public view.

The Swiss Federal President, Guy Parmelin, expressed his distress over the incident on the social platform X, particularly as this event follows closely after a New Year’s Eve tragedy in Crans-Montana where 40 individuals, mostly youths, perished in a fire.

Suspicions of Foul Play

The police are treating the bus fire as a potential criminal act after initial reports suggested deliberate arson. A local newspaper, Blick, cited an eyewitness account that claimed an individual had poured gasoline and ignited the fire, potentially targeting himself in the process. Police are investigating these claims to determine the credibility and identify the responsible parties.
