In the peaceful town of Kerzers, located about 20 kilometers west of Bern in Switzerland’s Fribourg canton, an unimaginable tragedy unfolded when a man reportedly set a public bus on fire. This devastating incident resulted in the deaths of six individuals, including the alleged arsonist. Additionally, five other passengers sustained injuries.

Authorities identified the suspected arsonist as a 65-year-old Swiss citizen described by investigators as a psychologically unstable individual who lived on the fringes of society. This man, who lost his life in the blaze, reportedly boarded the bus carrying bags and suddenly doused himself with a flammable liquid before igniting it. The fire rapidly engulfed the bus, leading to scenes of towering flames and thick smoke billowing from the vehicle, as captured in online videos.

The bus was completely consumed by the fire right in the heart of Kerzers. Despite the swift and tragic development of the event, the police have firmly ruled out terrorism as a motive, instead suggesting the act was deliberate.

### A Community in Mourning

The repercussions of this catastrophe resonated deeply within the Swiss political landscape. In Bern, members from both chambers of the Parliament paused their sessions to honor the victims of this heart-wrenching event. National Council President Pierre-André Page expressed his profound disturbance by stating, “This tragic event shakes not just a region, a canton, but far beyond.”

Swiss President Guy Parmelin also shared his sentiments on the social media platform X, expressing his dismay and sorrow over the loss of lives in this tragic fire. His statement drew a poignant connection to another recent tragedy at the turn of the year, where 41 people perished in a bar fire at the ski resort of Crans-Montana, leaving many more injured.

### Reflecting on the Event

The incident has left the community and the nation in a state of shock, prompting a reflective response from government officials and citizens alike about public safety and mental health support systems. As the investigation continues, there is a collective mourning and a somber reflection on how such tragedies can be prevented in the future.
