In a recent comprehensive analysis led by the Austrian test institute AV-Comparatives in partnership with the Faculty of Computer Science and Quality Engineering at the University of Innsbruck, 19 top anti-malware programs designed for Windows 11 were put through their paces. The testing, which spanned from February to the end of May, sought to evaluate how effectively these programs could defend against online threats without causing an excessive number of false alarms.

During the rigorous testing phase, the programs were subjected to realistic scenarios, which included navigating to compromised URLs. The expectation was clear: these antivirus tools needed to either block harmful software outright, prevent malware from executing, or successfully stop and remove it, ensuring the system remained uncompromised.
Despite the high stakes, not a single program managed to maintain a perfect record throughout the testing. Bitdefender Total Security, which emerged as one of the top performers, successfully thwarted 422 out of 423 attacks, marking a protection rate of 99.8%. It also maintained a lower rate of false positives, registering only three mistaken blocks, well below the average test result of eleven.
Total Defense Essential Anti-Virus distinguished itself by not triggering any false alarms at all. However, it allowed system compromises in three instances, which still placed it among the better performers in terms of minimal false alerts.
Other standout programs included Avast Free Antivirus and Malwarebytes Premium, both of which exhibited exemplary protection rates with only two oversights. However, their performance was somewhat marred by higher false alarm rates, with Avast and Malwarebytes triggering 13.5 and 35 false alarms, respectively.
From the field of candidates, eleven antivirus solutions demonstrated an admirable equilibrium between effective threat mitigation and minimizing false positives, earning them a three-star “Advanced” rating from AV-Comparatives. This esteemed group included not only Bitdefender Total Security and Total Defense Essential Anti-Virus but also paid solutions such as ESET Home Security Essential, G Data Total Security, Kaspersky Premium, McAfee Total Protection, Norton Antivirus Plus, TotalAV Antivirus Pro, and VIPRE Advanced Security.
### Exceptional Free Defenders
Among the free antivirus solutions tested, Avira Free Antivirus and Microsoft Defender Antivirus both earned a three-star rating for their robust protection capabilities. Avira, with only three errors and five false alarms, was among the top three performers in terms of protection. Microsoft Defender, while allowing one more system compromise than Avira, distinguished itself by generating only two false positives. Moreover, a notable advantage of Microsoft Defender over Avira is its lack of disruptive advertisements, making it a more user-friendly option in the realm of free antivirus software.
