In a significant diplomatic maneuver, US Special Envoys Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff recently met with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow. While details are sparse, the discussions are believed to focus on ending the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine. The White House has hinted that the talks were substantial, with Kushner and Witkoff presenting “concrete next steps,” details of which will be unveiled in the weeks to come.

The Situation in Kyiv

Following their meeting in Moscow, Kushner and Witkoff traveled to Kyiv, aiming to engage with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyj. Their arrival coincides with a temporary ceasefire in both capitals, although hostilities continue in other regions. The ongoing war, now in its fourth year, sees daily assaults from drones and missiles over Ukraine.

Dialogue in Moscow

The Kremlin shared that the discussions with the US envoys were “extremely honest” and “constructive.” Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov mentioned that several ideas for resolving the conflict were explored, though specifics remain under wraps. He expressed confidence in achieving Russia’s military objectives in Eastern Ukraine and highlighted ongoing progress on the battlefield. The talks also touched upon economic issues and potential large-scale projects beneficial to both nations.

Continued Hostilities

Despite the ceasefire in Moscow and Kyiv to facilitate talks, other areas continue to experience violence. The city of Saporizhzhia in Ukraine suffered attacks resulting in numerous casualties, as reported by Governor Ivan Fedorov. Additionally, drone strikes at a border crossing near Romania necessitated temporary closures, and a family in the town of Chuhuiv, Kharkiv region, tragically lost three members to a Russian drone.

In Russia, a Ukrainian drone sparked a fire at the Ryazan refinery southeast of Moscow, confirmed by regional governor Pavel Malkov. The incident was part of a series of drone attacks that also affected the Rostov region in southern Russia.

Global Repercussions

The diplomatic efforts by Kushner and Witkoff highlight the complex interplay of military and diplomatic strategies in the region. The outcomes of their discussions with leaders in Moscow and Kyiv could significantly influence the geopolitical landscape and the future of Ukraine.
