Residents of Suwaida and the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights have confirmed the military’s movement into the area, following which the Damascus government announced a ceasefire. This truce, according to Defense Minister Marhaf Abu Kasra, will hold unless government forces are fired upon. He emphasized the response would only be towards unauthorized groups attacking first.
The ceasefire, described as complete by local leaders, comes after significant casualties. Reports indicate that since Sunday, the clashes have led to over 100 deaths and approximately 200 injuries, including children. This alarming rise in violence started when Bedouins reportedly attacked and robbed a young Druze man at a newly established checkpoint.
Local Leaders and Military Response
The local Druze spiritual authorities have welcomed the military’s presence, asking Druze militias to lay down their arms and cooperate with government forces. This call for peace comes amidst efforts by local dignitaries to enforce the ceasefire agreement.
However, with government troops now active in the region, using artillery like rockets and mortars, some of which have reportedly hit residential areas, there is an increasing anxiety about the potential for further violence. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights has voiced concerns about repeating the catastrophic events similar to those along the Syrian coast earlier in March, where violent clashes resulted in about 1,500 deaths, many of whom were civilians.
These developments follow the overthrow of Bashar al-Assad six months ago, who had led Syria through a devastating civil war since 2011. The new government under President Ahmed al-Scharaa is striving to bring stability back to the nation, amidst ongoing clashes between different ethnic groups and militias, as well as continued terrorist attacks.
The recent efforts to establish control in Suwaida reflect the complex and fragile nature of peace in a region marred by long-term conflict and ethnic divisions.
